The Hawk Newspaper

During my Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semester at Saint Joseph's University, I completed an internship with the student-run newspaper, The Hawk. As the Opinions editor, I challenged myself to redesign the Opinions section, which traditionally consists of four Opinion columns. In order to break up the text-heavy section, I proposed six new sections to the editor-in-chief: Questions for Hawks, When Art Speaks, Toby Tales, People of Hawk Hill, Here to Help, and Penned by a Poet. The goal of incorporating these sections was to encourage more personalized stories, seek out a diverse range of writers and artists, and design pages that reflect the creativity and change that I craved for the Opinions section.

Below is a sample of some of my favorite newspaper pages that I helped lay out using Adobe InDesign as well as stories that I helped edit. Through the process of finding guest columnists, I've had the chance to meet new people and even reconnect with long-lost friends. It's truly been a pleasure being the Opinions editor for The Hawk. I hope you enjoy reading and viewing these pages as much as I've enjoyed working on them! (Click the images to view them in full screen.)
